How to care for Dracaena Victoria

Sunlight

Grows well in medium to bright indirect light and tolerates low light. Strong direct sun can scorch the leaves, and very low light dulls the colour.

Water

Let the top 4–5 cm of soil dry before watering, usually every 10–14 days. Dracaenas are sensitive to overwatering and to salts in tap water.

Humidity & temperature

Average indoor humidity is fine, at 18–32°C. Brown tips are common in dry AC air — if you can, water with filtered or settled water and keep humidity steady.

Soil & feeding

Use a well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage. Feed lightly every 6–8 weeks in the growing season; too much fertiliser burns the leaf tips.

Pruning

Remove brown lower leaves and trim tall canes in spring; new shoots form just below the cut.

Propagation

Root cane or top cuttings in water or moist soil during the warm season, keeping them warm and out of direct sun until roots form.

Common problems

  • Symptom

    Brown leaf tips

    Cause

Dry air, or salts and fluoride in tap water — try filtered water.

  • Symptom

    Yellow lower leaves

    Cause

Overwatering, or natural ageing as the plant grows taller.

  • Symptom

    Soft, dark stem base

    Cause

Root and stem rot from waterlogged soil.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the lower leaves drop?

Dracaenas naturally shed older lower leaves as they grow taller. If the loss is rapid, check for overwatering or cold drafts.

Can I cut it back if it gets too tall?

Yes. Cut the cane at the height you want in spring; new shoots form below the cut, and the top section can be rooted as a new plant.

Is it safe for pets and children?

Keep Dracaena Victoria out of reach of pets and small children. Many ornamental plants can irritate the mouth or stomach if chewed. If a pet or child eats part of the plant, contact a vet or doctor.
