About ZZ Plant
Waxy, dark green leaves that keep their shine under artificial lighting with minimal watering — one of the most forgiving plants for a rental or long-term office placement.
Stores water in its underground rhizomes, so it thrives on neglect and low light.
Where it works best
- Reception & lobby corners
- Low-light meeting rooms
How to care for ZZ Plant
Sunlight
Tolerates low light but grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid long hours of harsh afternoon sun through glass, which can scorch the leaves.
Water
Water only when the soil is completely dry — often every 2–4 weeks. Its thick rhizomes store water, so overwatering is a bigger risk than forgetting.
Humidity & temperature
Happy in dry, air-conditioned air. Comfortable at roughly 15–35°C; keep it away from direct cold drafts from AC vents.
Soil & feeding
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. Feed at half strength every 6–8 weeks during the growing season.
Pruning
Rarely needed. Remove damaged or dead leaves at the base with clean, sharp scissors.
Propagation
Divide the clump at repotting, keeping roots on each section. Some also root from leaf cuttings: let the cutting dry for a day, then plant it in gritty mix and water sparingly.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I water it?
Check the soil rather than the calendar. Water only when the pot feels light and the soil is dry to a finger's depth, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away.
Can it live without natural light?
It tolerates dim spaces for a long time, but not forever. Rotate it to a brighter spot every few months, or use a grow light in windowless rooms.
Is it safe for pets and children?
Keep ZZ Plant out of reach of pets and small children. Many ornamental plants can irritate the mouth or stomach if chewed. If a pet or child eats part of the plant, contact a vet or doctor.
